Is it a fit for you? Take the quick check
Answer five yes-or-no questions. Each answer shows why it matters. The result is a checklist to bring to your doctor, not medical advice.
Are you an adult, 18 or older?
The label is for adults; under 18 should not use it without a physician.Do you take blood pressure medicine, nitrates or a sildenafil-type drug?
Arginine and citrulline may add to their effect and drop pressure too low. Ask your doctor first and never stop your medicine.Have you had a heart attack or do you have heart disease?
An arginine trial after heart attack was stopped early with more deaths in the arginine group. Talk to your cardiologist.Have you had a reading over 180/120, or chest pain or sudden weakness?
Those need urgent care now. Call 911 if you have symptoms. Are you pregnant or nursing, or do you have kidney or liver disease?
The label asks you to consult a physician first.
Is BloodPril safe?
For most healthy adults, its ingredients appear safe in the short term. L-citrulline is rated possibly safe short term, but it might lower blood pressure (WebMD, L-citrulline). That same effect is what makes it risky for some people.
Reported side effects for arginine and citrulline include stomach upset, bloating, diarrhea and low blood pressure, which can feel like dizziness. Our side effects page covers each one.
The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements). The label says the capsules were made in an FDA registered facility. That is a listing for the factory, not approval of the product. The Supplement Facts page shows the full label.
Who should not take L-arginine or citrulline without a doctor?
Some people need a doctor's okay before taking any arginine or citrulline product. The table lists the main cases and why each matters.
| Situation | Why it matters | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure medicine | Arginine and citrulline may add to its effect | Ask your doctor; never stop your medicine | (MSKCC, Arginine) |
| Nitrates, such as nitroglycerin | Pressure may drop too low | Do not combine without a doctor's okay | (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) |
| Sildenafil or tadalafil | Both widen vessels; pressure may drop too low | Ask your doctor first | (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) |
| A past heart attack | An arginine trial was stopped early with more deaths | Talk to your cardiologist | (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006) |
| Heart, kidney or liver disease | The label asks you to consult a physician | Ask your doctor first | |
| Pregnant or nursing | The label asks you to consult a physician | Ask your doctor first | |
| Under 18 | The product is for adults | Do not use | |
| Surgery coming up | Blood pressure is closely managed around surgery | Tell your surgeon; ask when to stop |
What if you already take blood pressure medicine?
Medicine comes first
Keep taking it exactly as prescribed. Never stop, skip or change it because of a supplement. Arginine can lower blood pressure, so combining it with blood pressure drugs may not be safe (MSKCC, Arginine).
Ask your doctor before your first capsule. Bring the bottle so they can read the label.
If your doctor agrees, check your pressure more often in the first weeks. Write down any dizziness, especially when you stand up. Our article on supplements and blood pressure medicine goes deeper.
Why does a past heart attack matter so much?
Because one trial raised a real warning. In the VINTAGE MI trial, people took L-arginine for 6 months after a heart attack. It did not improve the heart or arteries, and more deaths occurred in the arginine group. The trial was stopped early (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006).
That study used far more arginine than BloodPril holds. Even so, it is a clear reason to talk to your cardiologist first. The same caution applies if you have other heart disease.
Is it suitable for older adults?
Age alone does not rule it out. But many older adults take two or more heart or blood pressure medicines. Each one adds to the chance of an interaction.
Dizziness when standing can lead to falls. If you feel lightheaded, sit down, check your pressure and call your doctor. Ask a family member to help with the cuff log if that makes it easier.
Who is BloodPril not the right choice for?
BloodPril is not the right choice if you want a replacement for blood pressure medicine. No supplement does that job. It is also not the right choice if you want the gram doses used in research, because one capsule holds 500 mg of blend in total.
And it is never a response to very high numbers. A reading above 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking needs 911 (AHA, Blood pressure readings).
What should you ask your doctor before you start?
Questions to bring to your next visit
- Show your doctor the BloodPril label. Is it safe with my current medicines?
- Should I take one capsule or two, or none at all?
- How often should I check my blood pressure at home while I try it?
- What reading should make me stop and call you?
- Should I stop it before any planned surgery or procedure?
- Is my home cuff accurate? Can I bring it in to check against yours?
Your doctor knows your history and your medicines. A five-minute talk is worth more than any web page, including this one. When you are ready, our how to take it page shows the daily routine.
Is BloodPril safe: questions people ask
Is BloodPril safe?
Its ingredients are amino acids that are possibly safe for most adults short term. It is not safe for everyone: people on blood pressure drugs, nitrates or sildenafil-type drugs, and people after a heart attack, need a doctor's okay first.
Who should not take L-arginine or citrulline?
People who have had a heart attack, and people taking nitrates, sildenafil-type drugs or blood pressure drugs, should not take it without a doctor's okay. The same goes for pregnancy, nursing, kidney or liver disease, and the weeks before surgery.
Can I take BloodPril if I am on blood pressure medicine?
Only if your doctor agrees. Arginine and citrulline may add to the effect of your medicine and make your pressure drop too low.
Can I take L-arginine with lisinopril or amlodipine?
Ask your doctor first. Both are blood pressure drugs, and arginine may add to their effect, so your doctor may want closer readings.
Should heart patients take L-arginine supplements?
It is not advised without your cardiologist. In the VINTAGE MI trial, more deaths occurred in the arginine group and the trial was stopped early.
Can I take BloodPril with Viagra or Cialis?
Do not combine them without a doctor's okay. Sildenafil and tadalafil also widen blood vessels, and together pressure may drop too low.
Is BloodPril safe for seniors?
Age alone does not rule it out, but many older adults take heart or blood pressure medicine. Ask your doctor, and watch for dizziness when you stand.
Can a woman take BloodPril?
Yes, the label is for adults of any sex. If you are pregnant or nursing, the label asks you to consult a physician first.
Can I take BloodPril with kidney disease?
Ask your doctor first. The label asks anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician, and the kidneys handle citrulline.
Does the FDA approve BloodPril?
No. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before sale. The label says it was made in an FDA registered facility, which is a factory listing, not approval.
