How BloodPril Works: The Nitric Oxide Pathway in Plain Words
Quick answerBloodPril supplies three amino-acid forms that feed the nitric oxide pathway. Citrulline is turned into arginine, and arginine is used to make nitric oxide, a gas that helps blood vessel walls relax. Trials that saw blood pressure change used grams a day, far more than one 500 mg capsule. No trial of BloodPril itself has been published.

What is BloodPril designed to do?
BloodPril is designed to give your body the raw materials for nitric oxide. Each capsule holds a 500 mg blend of three amino-acid forms. The front of the label says “Blood Pressure Support*” and “Premium Formula.”
That asterisk matters. It points to the FDA statement on the panel: “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” In plain words, BloodPril is a dietary supplement, not a blood pressure medicine. You can read the full panel on our Supplement Facts page.
How does the nitric oxide pathway work?
The pathway has four links, from capsule to vessel wall. Watch the steps play, or tap any step to read it.
Your body runs this pathway all day without any supplement. It makes arginine on its own and gets more from foods like meat, fish, nuts and beans. The question is whether a little extra arginine or citrulline changes anything for you. The research below gives the honest answer.
Why is citrulline listed first?
Citrulline may be a smoother route to arginine than arginine itself. In healthy volunteers, oral L-citrulline raised blood arginine more efficiently than the same amount of oral L-arginine (Schwedhelm et al., 2008).
Researchers explain it this way. A good share of swallowed arginine is used up in the gut and liver before it reaches the blood. Citrulline slips past that step, and the kidneys then turn it into arginine.
Label order tells you citrulline malate is the largest part of the blend, at least 167 mg. Part of that weight is malic acid, the carrier. Our citrulline vs. arginine article compares the two in more depth.
What does each ingredient add to the pathway?
| Ingredient | Role in the pathway | Per capsule (label order) | Doses used in studies | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L-Citrulline DL-Malate | Turned into arginine by the kidneys | At least 167 mg | Several grams a day | (Mirenayat et al., 2018) |
| L-Arginine AKG | Arginine bound to alpha-ketoglutarate | Up to 250 mg | 3 to 12 g a day, exercise studies | (Campbell et al., 2006) |
| L-Arginine HCL | Plain arginine as a salt | Up to 167 mg | 4 to 24 g a day | (Dong et al., 2011) |
All three end up as arginine in the blood. The two arginine salts differ only in the partner molecule bound to them. Read the full ingredients page for each one in detail.
What does research say about nitric oxide and blood pressure?
The pathway is real, and gram doses have moved numbers in trials. A meta-analysis pooled 11 trials with 387 people. Oral L-arginine at 4 to 24 g a day lowered systolic pressure by about 5 mmHg and diastolic by about 3 mmHg versus placebo (Dong et al., 2011).
A later review of arginine and citrulline found some modest drops at gram doses. Results varied, and long-term data are limited (Khalaf et al., 2019). Citrulline trials were small, and the authors asked for larger, longer studies (Mirenayat et al., 2018).
So the science supports the idea in principle. It does not tell us what a much smaller amount does, and it never tested this product.
Honest note: does BloodPril work at this dose?
We cannot say, and neither can anyone else yet. The whole blend is 500 mg, or 1,000 mg at the label maximum of two capsules. The arginine trials started at 4 grams of arginine alone. The bars show how far apart those numbers are.

Blood pressure trials of citrulline used several grams a day; one capsule's whole blend is 500 mg. (Mirenayat et al., 2018)

A smaller dose is not proof of failure. It is simply not the dose that was tested. What BloodPril does offer is a short, readable label and an easy once-a-day habit. If you try it, judge it with a cuff log over the 60-day window.
When can this pathway work against you?
Ask before you start
Arginine and citrulline may add to the effect of blood pressure drugs, nitrates such as nitroglycerin, and sildenafil-type drugs. Together they may drop pressure too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (WebMD, L-citrulline). After a heart attack, an arginine trial was stopped early because more deaths occurred in the arginine group (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006).
Never stop or change prescribed medicine because of a supplement. Ask your doctor first.
Dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand can be a sign of pressure dropping too low. Stomach upset and bloating have also been reported. Our side effects page lists what to watch for. A reading above 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness or vision change needs 911 right away (AHA, Blood pressure readings).
What moves blood pressure most reliably?
Everyday habits and prescribed care have the strongest evidence. Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure (CDC, High blood pressure facts). For most of them, lifestyle changes plus medicine when needed are the standard plan (MedlinePlus, High blood pressure).
DASH eating
More vegetables, fruit and low-fat dairy, with less sodium. This eating plan lowers blood pressure (NHLBI, DASH eating plan).
Less salt
Read labels on bread, soup and deli meat. Much of the salt we eat comes from packaged food.
Daily movement
Brisk walks most days help the heart and vessels. Ask your doctor what pace is right for you.
Medicine as prescribed
If you have a prescription, it does the heavy lifting. Take it on time, every day.
A supplement can sit beside these habits, never in place of them. Our blood pressure basics guide covers each one.
How can you tell whether anything changes for you?
Your own cuff readings are the only fair test. Use a validated upper-arm cuff. Sit quietly with your back supported and your arm at heart level, and measure at the same times each day (AHA, Home monitoring).
Write down a week of readings before your first capsule. Then keep logging. Bring the log to your doctor rather than judging one number. Our how to use page has a simple log table you can copy.
How BloodPril works: questions people ask
How does BloodPril work?
It supplies L-citrulline and two forms of L-arginine, the building blocks the body uses to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps vessel walls relax, which is the idea behind the label's Blood Pressure Support claim.
Does BloodPril actually work at one capsule a day?
No published trial has tested BloodPril itself, so no one can say how well one capsule works. Its ingredients have research behind them, but at gram doses many times larger than one capsule.
What does nitric oxide do for blood pressure?
Nitric oxide relaxes the muscle in blood vessel walls, so vessels widen. Wider vessels let blood pass with less force, which is why this pathway is studied for blood pressure.
Does L-citrulline turn into L-arginine?
Yes. The kidneys convert citrulline into arginine. A study in healthy volunteers found oral citrulline raised blood arginine more efficiently than the same amount of arginine.
Why does BloodPril use both citrulline and arginine?
Citrulline raises arginine levels over time, while arginine is already in the form cells use. The brand has not published why it chose this exact mix.
Do nitric oxide supplements work for blood pressure?
Some ingredient trials at gram doses saw small drops, such as about 5/3 mmHg with 4 to 24 g of arginine a day. Results vary, and no supplement replaces prescribed care.
How fast does nitric oxide work in the body?
Nitric oxide itself acts within seconds and breaks down quickly. Supplement trials, though, looked at blood pressure over several weeks, not minutes.
Can nitric oxide supplements lower blood pressure too much?
They can add to blood pressure drugs, nitrates and sildenafil-type drugs. That combination may drop pressure too low, so ask your doctor before you start.
Is BloodPril the same as blood pressure medicine?
No. It is a dietary supplement, not a drug, and the FDA did not review its claim. Keep taking any prescribed medicine exactly as directed.
